So I may have received an offer the other day that would result in me moving far, far away from Florida to somewhere cold. I was curious whether you can add aftermarket remote start to manual transmission equipped vehicles...specifically my Nissan Versa Note.

Not only is it a manual but it also doesn't have keyless entry, and I'm fairly certain remote starts are sometimes paired with those to flash the lights when it starts the car? Would it be possibru?

Yes, it is possible. If you need the clutch pushed in to start, you may need to disable that "feature", and you'll obviously need to put it in neutral when you park.

You can, but it costs more to install. At the Canadian Tire I work at, it's $300 for automatic and $360-380 for manual for a remote install, but prices are probably different where you are. I don't think not having keyless entry will prevent it from being installed.

Sure, if you find a shop willing to do it. Have to disable the clutch interlock if you have one of those. Just remember remote starting in gear leads to a car taking off on its own (good times, seen it happen more than once) so a lot of shops will tell you to pound sand.

I never leave my car in gear when I stop. When I bought the car new the salesman who pulled the car up left it in first and I nearly had a heart attack even though the handbrake was on.

Remote starts with a manual are not easy.

Mr. Carbuying Tom had one I thought, and you had to do something like double set the parking brake in neutral to engage the remote start system.

The places I've seen it happen were on service lots, car washes, and valet spots.

I've had an e-brake cable snap and car roll away (over a curb into traffic...not fun) so I always leave it in gear. No remote start for me anymore.

Sure it's possible, but you then have to leave it out of gear and depend 100% on the e-brake, which I wouldn't do. If it's parked on a completely level surface then not so big a deal. Most of the time there is no way to have a "safety" switch to see if it's in gear or not, so then you've got to remember when you did and didn't leave it in gear depending on how you park.

You can do it but it's not easy. Best Buy doesn't install them due to liability but one of the installers did one of my coworkers cars and just set it up to only start when the ebrake was on and the car was in neutral. Never had an issue with it.

I'm guessing the new the installer personally? Best Buy was kind of the route I was hoping to go down...

Don't move where it's cold just don't do it. It's -29F here this morning and I want to die. I would give just about anything to be comfortable in shorts and a T-Shirt.

Yeah we knew him personally so he did it out of his garage. But best buy won't touch manuals. Atleast the ones here in Chicago won't but some managers are so desperate for services they'll take the risk. Never huhurts to ask

Just throwing it out there but I would imagine it's possible to mount a solenoid to push the shifter into neutral position. You can then run a toggle switch to interlock the remote start/stop.

Of course you'll also have to worry about breaking the solenoid circuit when car is on.

As others have said... anything is possible! I saw one a few years ago that you had to activate to remote start before you left the vehicle by having the clutch out and e-brake on (proving to the system that you were in neutral). If you didn't 'arm' it this way, no remote start. I haven't seen it done like that since, but it seems like the "safest" way to approach it.

Why install a remote start system and not an independent vehicle heater? Uses less gas, is much better for your engine etc... Well, be be exact, letting the car idle to warm up the engine so that it can warm up your cabin is pretty much the worst thing you can do to your engine, and the environment but who cares about that.

I'd be all for it but doesn't the vehicle need to be garaged for that?

Those don't seem to be a thing here in the US. Electric block heaters, yes, but I've never come across a combustion-type heater here, except for in old air-cooled VWs.

Nope. The idea is that you don't need a garage anymore. Set a time or press a button on the long range remote and it starts heating the cabin and the engine. Ice and snow melt and you can enjoy a warm car with a warm engine that doesn't have to go through the stress of a cold start. I really don't understand why they are pretty common in Europe yet almost unheard of in the US. Several large manufacturers (BMW among them) offer them as a regular option. http://www.webasto.com/index.php?id=1… Maybe this helps.

Haha, good on him. I’ve put this story on here before, but here’s what happened when my cable snapped. Was parked at a home depot. The lot looked flat, like it was so flat that shopping carts didn’t roll if you left them. Did what I always did at the time...ebrake only. Went inside the store. About 30 mins later they made an annoucement that there had been an accident and that the person who owned a gray wagon was needed. Apparently the cable snapped (witnesses said it sounded like a gun shot)the car started rolling really slowly at first but picked up enough momentum that at the end of the parking lot it jumped the curb and rolled out into a major road (rt1 in the DC area) where a bus whacked it. Somehow it missed all the other cars in the lot and just barely missed a bus shelter where about 15 people were avoiding the rain. So yeah, by being a dumbass and not putting it in gear I ended up with a busted car and almost injured/killed a bunch of people. Also ruined a lot of folks commutes since the bus ripped off its hub and had to be towed.

Inspected the cable afterwards and there wasn’t any particular binding or rubbing or corrosion...it just failed. Car wasn’t even that old...about 6 years at the time.

So yeah, listen to your dad :p. I’d been driving for about 10 years at the time, 90% manuals and never had an issue before, but if that car had killed one of those people at the bus stand I could have been charged with negligent homicide. I got real lucky, it only takes once.
